4 Tips for the Best Herb Garden
Herbs are a question I get asked a lot about, and today I am sharing my top 4 secrets to a successful cut and come again backyard herb container garden.
1 - Use a deep container, 6 inches minimum.
In order plant everything I wanted in one I opted for a 1 foot deep container.
2 - Drainage is KEY
Drill plenty of holes and use an airy soil blend to ensure that your herbs are not siting in water. Some veggies (like lettuces) love the moisture, herbs do not. Most culinary herbs are native to the mediterranean- recreate the sandy soil they enjoy.
3 - Harvest weekly
When you harvest, make sure you only harvest at most 1/3 of the plant so that it can recover and regrow more for you to harvest later!
My last tip is the biggest secret of all…
DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO IT!
Most Herb Garden failures are caused by overwatering. This also goes back to the importance of tip #2. I have watered this container garden during the heat waves but other than that, I don't pay much attention to it unless I can see the leaves are drooping and it is telling me it needs water.
